New Moon Breaks Records, But When Will Fanboys Strike Back?

Uh oh. The Twilight Saga: New Moon finally hit theaters this weekend to an estimated $140.7 million total, putting it in 3rd place behind The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) and Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million) on the opening weekend box office chart. But it did break other records. First it set the midnight record earning some $26.3 million on Thursday night and it also set the biggest Friday one-day box office record, raking in some $72.7 million on that day alone. But then all the Twihards decided to get some sleep and it died off to settle in 3rd place just below two other big blockbusters for the weekend overall. Phew! But what's next?

Of course, we've got one more (or maybe two, counting Breaking Dawn) big Twilight openings still coming up. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is already set to hit theaters next June 30th. And if the Twilight franchise can do ...

Indie Trailer Sunday: Corneliu Porumboiu's Police, Adjective

IFC Films debuted the US trailer for Corneliu Porumboiu's Police, Adjective earlier this week on Apple. This is one of those films that I missed at Cannes and have heard good things about ever since. It won two awards in Cannes and has since played well at a few other major festivals around the world. That photo you see above is not from the film itself, but is the image used on the poster for Police, Adjective and is the same photo that caught my attention when I first saw it in Cannes program. It doesn't really look like a comedy, but apparently it's a "whip-smart, dryly funny comedy." I'd say I'm definitely interested in checking it out.

Hitting theaters next week for Thanksgiving is the most badass action-packed ninja movie you'll see this year - Ninja Asssassin. It's directed by James McTeigue, who got his start working as the Assistant Director for the Wachowski Brothers on The Matrix, then spun off and directed V for Vendetta on his own. Watch This: Flashy Full-Length Season of the Witch Trailer

Lionsgate has debuted the full-length trailer for Season of the Witch starring Nic Cage and Ron Perlman on Fandango today. We previously featured a very short teaser trailer for this back during Halloween. If it weren't for Cage being so damn cheesy, I would say this actually looks pretty damn cool. I mean, its got Ron Perlman and it's about a witch who summons evil to attack this group of guys trying to transport her across Europe. It looks pretty badass, like some good, dark cinematic entertainment, let's just hope it holds up and Cage doesn't ruin it. I'm not sure I have faith in Dominic Sena yet, but we'll find out in March. ABC Announces Lost Premiere!

ABC announced today that the sixth and final season of "Lost" will kick-off with a special all-night event on Tuesday, February 2. A recap special will kick off the night from 8:00-9:00 p.m., ET, followed by the much anticipated two-hour premiere from 9:00-11:00 p.m.

The series will then air in its regular time period Tuesday nights from 9:00-10:00 p.m., ET beginning the following week, on February 9.

On the eve of the release of New Moon, Summit has debuted the trailer for Remember Me, starring their money-making hunk Robert Pattinson. However, don't write this off so quickly, it also stars Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, and Emilie de Ravin as the love interest. And honestly, this was looking really good until all of the cheesy lines like: "I'm undecided." "About what?" "Everything..." Must Watch: Impressive International Trailer for Percy Jackson

Fox has quietly debuted yet another new trailer for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, making this the third trailer we've seen for this movie so far. Up until this point, we haven't really known what this would be like, what would happen in it and what the story would be. But this trailer finally gives us a glimpse of all that and I've got to say I'm a little more than curious now. In fact, I'm actually very impressed, this looks great, I'm totally in. The effects look good, even though they're probably far from being done, and the story looks pretty entertaining. My only complaint is that this means we'll see two different Medusa's next year!

Universal Near Deal for 47 Ronin Director

Variety reports that Universal Pictures is near a deal with Carl Eric Rinsch to make his feature directing debut on 47 Ronin , the epic period samurai swordsmen tale that will star Keanu Reeves.

Rinsch, who shoots commercials for RSA, has been on HollywoodÂ's radar. RSA-owners Ridley and Tony Scott previously had discussions with Rinsch to direct the Alien prequel until Ridley Scott decided to return to the franchise he launched.

Written by Chris Morgan ( Wanted ), 47 Ronin tells the famous fact-based story of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenge the death of their master in 18th Century Japan.

Must Watch: New Trailer for Rob Marshall's Sexy Musical Nine

As a huge fan of Italian filmmaker Federico Fellini, it's great to see such a vibrant trailer for Rob Marshall's Nine, a musical based on the original musical of the same name, which was derived from an Italian play by Mario Fratti which itself was inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film 8½. Much like Marshall's Chicago, this new trailer is chock full of singing, dancing and scantily clad women including the prominently featured Kate Hudson, and the laughable appearance of Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson as Fellini's iconic slutty, crazy, dancing character Saraghina. Dead Arrivals: Linklater's Liars (A to E) & McG's 20,000 Leagues

Two project have both been confirmed as dead on arrival today. First, Richard Linklater's very next project, Liars (A to E), has been canned, the first victim of Miramax's downsizing. Back in early October, the indie studio was forced to cut most of their employees and reduce the number of films they put out to only three or so per year. Movieline reports today that Liars (A to E), about a newly single girl who takes a roadtrip to Obama's inauguration, which was supposed to be next from the studio, is no longer happening. "It didn't really work out. It's tough," Linklater told them. He had even cast Rebecca Hall and Kat Dennings as leads.

Author Jonathan Ames Adapating His Novel 'Wake Up, Sir!'

Author Jonathan Ames has written in almost every format under the sun from novels to stage plays and memoirs to comics, but recently he made the jump to writing for TV and cinema. Not only is he the creator of the HBO series "Bored to Death" (starring Jason Schwartzman), but an adaptation of one of his novels, The Extra Man, starring John C. Reilly and Paul Dano is already in post-production. The Gothamist reports (via SlashFilm) that Ames is in the midst of adapting another of his novels, Wake Up, Sir! for hopeful production in 2010 and there's interest in a possible film based on his comic strip The Alcoholic as well.

Starz and Visceral Games have revealed the first trailer for the animated Dante's Inferno , based on the immortal epic. From the producers of Dead Space: Downfall , the feature-length movie expands on the story in EA's new game coming out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Just as the poem and game take players on a stunning journey through the nine circles of Hell, the Dante's Inferno animated feature will also follow Dante as he travels through limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, anger, heresy, violence, fraud and treachery in search of his true love, Beatrice. Indie Trailer Sunday: Shake Hands with the Devil Trailer

Today's trailer is for an indie that has been on hold for quite a few years. Shake Hands with the Devil first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2007. In fact, director Roger Spottiswoode actually directed another film (The Children of Huang Shi) while waiting for this to be released. Regent Releasing is finally bringing Shake Hands with the Devil to theaters in 2010 and has debuted a trailer for it on Apple. I'm featuring it for a few reasons. First, while some of the dialogue looks rough, the story looks incredible. Second, the cinematography and locations look gorgeous as well. It stars Roy Dupuis and Deborah Unger.

Author Cormac McCarthy Thinks Blood Meridian IS Filmable

Another great, supposedly "unfilmable" novel (besides Watchmen), is Cormac McCarthy's break out 1985 novel Blood Meridian. If you're not familiar with McCarthy, he's the author who wrote the novels that were turned into All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and now The Road. Blood Meridian is a critically acclaimed novel, set in the 1850s, about American mercenaries hunting Indians in the Mexican borderland. McCarthy recently talked with the Wall Street Journal (it's actually a fantastic interview) and was asked about why people think Blood Meridian is unfilmable. And his answer might surprise you.

MGM Officially Considering Selling, If Things Don't Get Better

Back in September, we reported that MGM (aka Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) was "on the verge of bankruptcy" and was asking for emergency funds to say alive. The studio has finally made announcements that indicate that they are actually going up for sale. Variety and Nikki Finke confirmed the news. "MGM also said today it is beginning a process to explore various strategic alternatives including operating as a standalone entity, forming strategic partnerships and evaluating a potential sale of the Company." It looks like it's the end of an era for MGM once and for all. So will The Hobbit be caught in crossfire, too? We're not entirely sure.

Silent Hill 2 to Start Filming in 2010?

Silent Hill special makeup effects designer Paul Jones gave ShockTillYouDrop.com an update about the sequel today on the Toronto set for Resident Evil: Afterlife .

"I was working on storyboards for that around the same time last year," Jones revealed. "It's going to be pretty crazy. There's a lot of cool stuff in there. Roger (Avary) has some awesome ideas and hopefully we're going to bring that to fruition sometime next year."

He would not comment on whether the script was complete, but he said that with a smile.

The first film, released in 2006, was directed by Christophe Gans and earned $97.6 million worldwide.

Fantastic Mr. Fox Has Universal Acclaim from Critics So Far!

Inspired by this amusing post on Awards Daily titled "How to Build a Sturdy Foxhole", I thought I'd point out that Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, which hits limited theaters (in New York and Los Angeles) this weekend before expanding on Thanksgiving, is getting positive reviews. Over on Metacritic, Fantastic Mr. Fox currently has a score of 87, which earns it the "universal acclaim" tag. Ryan points out that 7 of the 9 reviews tracked have a score of 80 or above, which is pretty damn impressive. In comparison, Where the Wild Things Are only has a score of 71 on Metacritic, but it also has quite a few perfect 100 reviews, too.

Roland Emmerich's latest world-destruction movie, 2012, hits theaters this weekend (I've seen it, it's totally awesome, by the way), which means most people are going to be talking about Emmerich's illustrious career once again. Say what you will, but my favorite Emmerich film is still Independence Day from 1996, and most people I know agree with me. So how about a sequel? Well, we reported in October that Emmerich has been developing one, but that it probably wasn't going to happen. Whereas Zemeckis used to be an amazing filmmaker, he's now become our bi-yearly deliverer of a fantastical 3D CGI version of some beloved holiday story. First it was The Polar Express, this year it's A Christmas Carol, so what's up next after that? Pajiba claims that Zemeckis will eventually be adapting The Nutcracker as well, but it's not clear if that'll come before or after he remakes The Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Whatever the case, I'm not excited, despite my love for these wonderful holiday stories.

Check This Out: Another Awesome Teaser Poster for Kick-Ass

"I can't fly. But I can kick your ass." Yesterday evening the teaser trailer for Kick-Ass hit the web, finally introducing everyone to Mark Millar's awesome comic book "super" hero. In addition to that trailer, a new poster has popped up on MySpace, a one-off teaser poster not like the four connected ones we featured last week. As you can tell, Lionsgate is obviously going with the spray paint motif in their marketing campaign for Kick-Ass, as it was used heavily in the trailer and now it's part of the logo on this poster. Francis Lawrence Taking DC Comics' Sgt. Rock Into the Future

A movie based on DC Comics' WWII hero Sgt. Rock has been stuck in development hell for quite some time and last we heard was Guy Ritchie might be at the helm until he became attached to Lobo. But that was over a year and a half ago, and THR's Heat Vision now says that Francis Lawrence (who last directed I Am Legend) is attached to direct a script from newcomer Chad St. John with super-producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman guiding the project for Warner Bros. However, Sgt. Rock will be lifted from the period fight in World War II into the future to avoid feeling dated and out of tune with contemporary issues.

Paramount played this new extended TV trailer for Jason Reitman's Up in the Air during the "Mad Men" season finale yesterday, so you might've already seen it, but if not, here's your chance. It's a short 'n sweet new trailer with most of the footage we've seen before in either of the first two trailers. But since Up in the Air deserves some more love and since this trailer has great quotes from various critics, it's worth featuring anyway. I hope everyone is planning to see this when it hits theaters in December, it's easily one of the best films of the year. And if all goes well, it might end up winning some Oscars, too. The Romantics revolves around eight friends from college who reunite for a wedding. Holmes plays Laura, the maid of honor to Paquin's Lila, the bride. "Where wonder lives, and adventure rules!" You have got to see this crazy new TV spot! Fox put together a more family friendly TV spot for James Cameron's Avatar that sells it much more like Star Wars or an animated space adventure for kids (or something like that). At first I thought this was kind of cheesy, but actually, it's kinda fun to see. So far all the marketing for Avatar has been very epic and focused towards the Cameron fanboys, but I love seeing a whole different side of Pandora this time. I doubt it'll convert anyone, except for kids and their parents, but still. I just hope this is truly the "greatest adventure of all-time!"

Duncan Jones to Direct Source Code Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

Most people probably haven't heard of Source Code yet, but everyone should hopefully be familiar with director Duncan Jones (@ManMadeMoon on Twitter), who broke out earlier this year with his sci-fi indie flick Moon. Variety announces today that Jones is next set to direct a sci-fi thriller called Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal in negotiations to star as the main character Colter. Mark Gordon (The Messenger, 12 Rounds, 2012) is producing with Vendome Pictures' CEO Philippe Rousselet and Jordan Wynn. Production is slated to begin during the first quarter of next year, making this Jones' very next project instead of Mute.

This trailer has been out for a few days now, but I thought it was the perfect trailer to feature today, not only because no one is at work on a Sunday, but because it's a great indie trailer. Joe Johnston Talks Jurassic Park 4

Ain't It Cool News got a chance to talk to The Wolfman director Joe Johnston and the interview briefly turned to the possibility of a Jurassic Park 4 . Johnston directed the third film in the franchise, which was released in 2001.

"There is a great story for the fourth one that I would be interested in getting involved with and it's nothing like the first three," Johnston told the site, "It sort of takes the franchise off in a completely different direction, which is the only way I would want to get involved."

He added that it likely won't be another storyline about a group of people struggling to survive a dinosaur attack. "We've done that and it's been done three times..."

ShockTillYouDrop.com has learned exclusively that Twisted Pictures ("Saw" franchise) is developing the horror graphic novel "Sorrow" for the big screen.

Unexpected 'Howling Reborn' Project Comes Out of Nowhere

While perusing the halls at AFM this week, ShockTillYouDrop came across a rather interesting new poster for a sequel that we've never heard of until today. It's called The Howling Reborn and is, supposedly, a sequel or remake or reboot of The Howling, the classic werewolf movie from 1981 that was directed by Joe Dante. That original film spawned some six sequels and created the Howling legacy. The last one, titled Howling: New Moon Rising, arrived on DVD in 1995. So who or what is on it, if it's not the Wolfman himself? Just Emily Blunt, who plays Gwen Conliffe, that's all. Cinematical has debuted the first teaser poster for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman, which we've seen two trailers for so far. Bam! First line: "Sam's dead!" Wow, Lionsgate is really throwing everyone head first right in to the thick of this. Yahoo has debuted another new trailer for Jim Sheridan's Brothers starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman. Can you remember back to July 3rd, 2007? You were probably sitting in a theater, and some random trailer started playing that had footage from a surprise birthday party for some guy named Rob. DreamWorks and Doubleday Acquire Robopocalypse

DreamWorks Studios and Doubleday have acquired, in a pre-emptive deal, the rights to Daniel H. Wilson's unpublished manuscript, "Robopocalypse," it was announced today by Mark Sourian and Holly Bario, Co-Presidents of Production at the studio, and Jason Kaufman, Executive Editor and Vice President, at Doubleday.

DreamWorks acquired the film rights from literary manager Justin Manask and is putting the project into accelerated development. Kaufman acquired world publishing rights to "Robopocalypse" from Laurie Fox at the Linda Chester Literary Agency and a tentative 2011 publication date has been set for the book.

Let's give this another shot. Yesterday afternoon the official trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hit the web. For reasons I can't understand, most people hated it, or at least said it wasn't what they expected and look terrible. Another different international trailer for Prince of Persia has popped up today (via Trailer Addict) that is shorter, but better, than that first one. For an adaptation of a video game, I think it looks awesome. It looks like it'll have plenty of badass action and I really don't mind Jake Gyllenhaal. Hopefully in time, and with better footage like this, the rest of you will warm up to Prince of Persia as well.

Isn't weird that even though a movie makes lots of money and is considered a huge success, no one wants to see a sequel. And yet movies that barely make any money somehow get sequels that no one wants (e.g. Ghost Rider)? Well, the good news is that we probably won't see a District 9 sequel for a few years. That's good because I don't want a sequel to be rushed into production. But it's also bad because I'd actually like to see them make District 10 at some point. I love xkcd. It's one of my favorite webcomics and is daily reading for me. It's very geeky, mainly for tech and math geeks, but it's brilliant. Simple style with big ideas. The latest comic created by Randall Munroe on xkcd.org features a series of Movie Narrative Charts that map out characters throughout an entire trilogy (specifically Lord of the Rings and Star Wars). Martin Campbell Talks Green Lantern Effects

Green Lantern director Martin Campbell ( Casino Royale , GoldenEye ) told Empire magazine (via Coventry Telegraph ) they've got their work cut out in bringing the comic book to life.

"It's daunting," he said. "Just the process, something like 1,300 visual effects shots, it's mind-blowing, quite honestly."

Campbell said that a lot of the effects shots work will concentrate on the Green Lantern's power ring. Indie Trailer Sunday: Zhang Yimou's Amazing Tales: Three Guns

This trailer is only for hardcore fans of Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) and those who don't need any English subtitles! Twitch has dug up the first trailer for Zhang Yimou's Amazing Tales: Three Guns, his remake of the Coen Brothers' first film Blood Simple. Watch This: International Trailer for Matt Damon's Green Zone

You may have already seen this, but if not, here's your chance. If you have, well, watch it again. Earlier this week the official trailer for Paul Greengrass' Green Zone starring Matt Damon hit the web. It was a great trailer but most people complained that it looked too much like another Bourne movie. Later that same day an international version of the Green Zone trailer hit MSN. It's a different trailer that presents the story in a more coherent and progressive way. It still looks a bit like another Bourne movie, but it's actually a better trailer than the first. Knowing even more of the story, I'm actually more excited to see this. So check it out!

New Sherlock Holmes Facebook Viral Game Launches Online

I'm not entirely sure if this is connected with the "Widen your gaze Mr. Holmes" mini-viral from August, however, I get the feeling that this is the next step in that game. Earlier today I received an email in my inbox with a telegram saying: "London seethes with crime -- STOP -- find your partner upon whom you will rely -- STOP -- evidence secured for your advance assessment -- STOP -- the game is afoot -- STOP -- make all haste to 221B now." It then linked to a site located at 221B.sh where users can visit and participate in a viral game on Facebook for the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie. It's not amazing, but it is a lot of fun.

Stephen L'Heureux on Sin City 2 , Hard Boiled

Comics2Film at Mania.com got a chance to talk to producer Stephen L'Heureux about Sin City 2 and Hard Boiled .

L'Heureux told the site that the Sin City sequel will go into production in the second half of 2010. The sequel will be based on an original script by Frank Miller, who will again co-directed with Robert Rodriguez.

The producer added that Miller is working on the screenplay for Hard Boiled , based on his and Geof Darrow's comic about an insurance investigator-turned-cyborg assassin. Miller is attached to direct the adaptation.

Because Sin City 2 will take up Miller's time for a while, Hard Boiled could take a while to hit theaters. "There's also talk, of course, of 'Sin City 3'," he said.

Must Watch: Great Trailer for John Lennon Biopic Nowhere Boy

I didn't expect we'd see a trailer for this film this quickly, but alas, here it is. The first trailer for Sam Taylor-Wood's Nowhere Boy, the biopic about a young John Lennon, has debuted on YouTube (via The Playlist). This actually looks fantastic, even better than I was expecting. It definitely seems like Taylor-Wood made the right choice picking Aaron Johnson to play Lennon and I'm also impressed by how quickly the young Thomas Sangster has grown up. He looks a lot older in this as Paul McCartney than he did in Love Actually. Whether you're a fan of The Beatles or not, I suggest you watch this trailer anyway. You'll find it below!

Peter Berg is Off of Dune; Paramount Wants Neill Blomkamp

As we've known for at least a year, Paramount has been trying to develop another take on Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi classic Dune, originally attaching The Kingdom director Peter Berg. Since then, we've heard off and on from Berg, including this most recent update from September where he revealed that it would be a PG-13 "massive epic," which was a step in the right direction. Movie blog Pajiba is now reporting that Berg has left the project and "his Film 44 production company backed out." Now Paramount is scrambling to find a new director." According to them, District 9's Neill Blomkamp is one of only two alternatives.

Must Watch: Official Trailer for Paul Greengrass' Green Zone

After delaying the release for a few months, Universal has finally debuted the first official trailer for Green Zone, directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon, Jason Isaacs, Greg Kinnear, Brendan Gleeson, and Amy Ryan. This is the first we've heard about this project since the first photo arrived last July. And surprisingly it looks a lot better than I was expecting. I guess I should trust in Paul Greengrass - he usually always delivers a solid action film, especially when paired with Matt Damon (hint, hint). Anyway, this trailer has now made Green Zone one of my most anticipated movies to see next March, so be sure to check it out!

John Woo's new World War II film Flying Tigers has been in the works for some time now. The fighter squadron story emerged last December when it was part of a trio of projects that Tom Cruise was circling. Finally, An Official Theatrical Sherlock Holmes Poster Appears

Finally! I say that because Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes hits theaters in two months and we haven't seen a real poster besides the character one-sheets released in June and the never-used one from ShoWest. I was hoping I'd be able to say they fixed the proportions of Robert Downey Jr's head on this new poster (via Cinematical), but I was wrong, as his head on this poster looks just as weird as it did before. Besides that though, I'm digging the style of this, especially with all the other "trinkets" along the sides. Although I'm not sure about that tagline either: "Holmes for the Holiday." Really? Might We See Paranormal Activity 2 ?

After its one month climb to the top of the box office, culminating in its first weekend at #1 with $22 million, Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity is clearly a box office phenomenon, a point driven home by the subsequent failure of Saw VI to replicate the success of the previous five installments of the successful horror franchise. The Lionsgate mainstay opened in second place this weekend with $14.8 million, less than half the opening of the previous four movies.

Not surprisingly, the L.A. Times is now reporting that Paramount already owns the worldwide rights to make a sequel to the surprise hit, and the company's chairman Brad Grey tells them that they're "looking to see if that makes some sense."

Indie Trailer Sunday: Hal Holbrook in That Evening Sun Trailer

Earlier this week I was introduced to a small genre of film that I didn't know existed - Southern Gothic. If you're unsure of what exactly that means, like I was at first, just check out this trailer and you'll completely understand. Russ from SlashFilm recently pointed out this trailer for That Evening Sun that stars Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, and Mia Wasikowska (who plays Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). It looks like Hal Holbrook can still deliver an oustanding performance. I was moved by his work in Into the Wild and it looks like this will be great thanks to him as well. Shane Black Writing a Doc Savage Script for Kurtzman/Orci

Anyone a big fan of the 1930's pulp comics character Doc Savage created by Henry W. Ralston? According to Ain't It Cool News, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang screenwriter Shane Black will be writing a Doc Savage script for Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Eagle Eye, Star Trek) to produce. Harry Knowles ran into Shane at a party recently in Austin and was told by Black that "he is preparing to write the script." Apparently a Doc Savage movie has been in development for a long time without much real progress, but with Black on-board working on a new screenplay, and with Kurtzman/Orci producing, it may actually get somewhere this time.

Damn you Sly Stallone! There's a story making its way around the web right now that features a few new quotes from Sylvester Stallone that say that he just announced that he'll be going back to playing Rocky Balboa yet again in Rocky 7. Apparently Stallone was talking with Tele 5 in Germany and the quotes ended up online at places like TeenSay.co.uk (via SlashFilm). We already know that Sly is now finishing up The Expendables, due for release next August, and got a greenlight from Nu Image to make Rambo 5 next year. Mad Max 4: Fury Road Confirmed, Budget of $100 Million!

This is the weekend that Mad Max is making its return. Yesterday morning a rumor hit saying that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were director George Miller's top choices to star in Mad Max 4. Later in the day, THR published a story confirming that Mad Max 4, now officially titled Fury Road, was actually already ready to go into production in Sydney and in New South Wales next year. They did not confirm any of the actors, but did mention that the budget would be close to $100 million, despite having no studio funding or backing for the project. That is some impressive indie financing. Obviously the locals rule in Australia.

James Bond 23 to Start Filming End of 2010

CommanderBond.net alerted us to a video in which Daniel Craig says that James Bond 23 will start filming at the end of 2010. The star was asked about the next film as he exited the stage door for "A Steady Rain," a Broadway play he is currently performing in with Hugh Jackman. As you can see in the video below right before the one-minute mark, Craig says "We start at the end of next year."

It will be the third 007 installment starring Craig. His previous two films, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace , earned $594 million and $586 million, respectively, at the worldwide box office.

Peter Morgan, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing the script for the 23rd film, which does not have a director attached yet.

Rumor: DiCaprio & Maguire Are Remaking The Third Man?

Another rumor to chew over this fine Friday afternoon. CHUD is reporting that Canal+ from France is gearing up to remake Carol Reed's 1949 classic The Third Man that starred Orson Welles and Bernard Lee. Apparently none other than Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are already cast and helping develop the project. While they say it doesn't have a director yet, the screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises. Sounds like a lot of great talent, but of course, is a remake of The Third Man even necessary or desired? It's a true noir classic that really can't be topped.

Mastodon Explains How Exactly They Came to Score Jonah Hex

Do you remember the news that heavy metal band Mastodon would be scoring the Jonah Hex movie? Yea, I'm still a bit bewildered by that, but it's being cleared up today, finally. Paste (via SlashFilm) just did an interview with Mastodon recently and got the full story, including that they're not dropping any all-out heavy metal tracks into the movie, but rather recording instrumental songs that will be integrated into the score, similar to how Linkin Park worked with Steve Jablonsky for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen score. It's actually kind of fascinating to hear and I'm much more excited to hear their score knowing this.

Can Warner Brothers repeat the success of Gran Torino twice? Yahoo has debuted the official poster for Clint Eastwood's Invictus, which stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as rugby player Francois Pienaar. We're not sure when the first trailer will hit (probably later this week), but I'm just as excited to see this poster, mainly because Invictus is the last big Oscar wildcard. Most Oscar pundits are saying that Invictus might end up the big Best Picture winner, but they're saying that without having seen a single frame of footage. TMNT Global Rights Picked Up By Nickelodeon/Paramount

It was announced this morning that Nickelodeon has acquired global rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise from The Mirage Group / 4Kids Entertainment for roughly $60 million. Nickelodeon also announced plans to develop a new CG-animated television series based on the popular superhero franchise, anticipated to premiere in 2012. Additionally, in partnership with Viacom's Paramount Pictures, a release of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film is also planned for 2012. New Line previously released the originally three live-action TMNT films and Warner Brothers released the recent CGI movie from 2007.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a property that maintains a very passionate global fan base, is rich with opportunity for a tentpole movie, and is exactly the right property for us to work together with Nickelodeon," said Adam Goodman, President, Paramount Pictures.

Must Watch: Second Trailer for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman!

Just in time for Halloween, Universal has debuted a second new trailer for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman on Apple. This trailer is considerably different from the first trailer from July, featuring less dialogue, one contemporary rock song running throughout, and a focus more on the monster and the intensity (and less on the story). I just really hope this is going to be rated R in the end, because after watching this trailer, I want as intense of a frickin' Wolfman movie as I can get. Considering I've loved just about every movie that Hugo Weaving has been in as well, I expect to love this one, too. Anyway, check out the new trailer below!

New Full-Length TV Trailer for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

We haven't really seen new footage from Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes since the first trailer debuted way back in May, but that changes today. TheMovieBox has premiered a new TV trailer for Sherlock Holmes (as in, shown on TV, not in theaters). It's two minutes long and it definitely contains a lot of great footage we haven't seen before. The closer we get to December, the more excited I get for this. And this new trailer definitely gets my blood pumpin'. It looks like it has a great mix of action and intensity as well as comedy. Willem Dafoe is Playing a 9-Foot Tall Alien in John Carter of Mars

We've known that Willem Dafoe had been cast in Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars since July, so that's not the news here today, but the actor talked with both AICN and MTV recently and revealed a lot of interesting details about his character and the project. While the debate over whether James Cameron's Avatar will be a success or not still wages on, it seems the movie has already inspired other big Hollywood productions, including this one. Without seeing anything it's hard to know exactly what it'll look like, but it sounds like Stanton is working on the next Avatar-like sci-fi epic with 9-foot tall aliens and CGI characters.

3 Minute and 30 Second Avatar Trailer Coming!!

ComingSoon.net has confirmed that 20th Century Fox will debut a new trailer for James Cameron's Avatar in theaters this Friday, October 23rd! The trailer, which clocks in at roughly around 3 minutes and 30 seconds, won't be coming online until October 29th. You should really see this in theaters anyways as we've learned that this is THE trailer, the one that will show you much more story (as opposed to the teaser trailer previously released).

First Photos of Amber Heard in John Carpenter's The Ward

After roughly eight years, John Carpenter is finally back to directing once again. His newest film, The Ward, stars Amber Heard, Danielle Panabaker, Lyndsy Fonseca, and a few other young actresses, and is a psychological thriller set in a mental institution. Over on the Premiere Picture website (via Dread Central), a few new photos and a bit of early artwork for The Ward have popped up. Considering we've seen nothing from this yet and it is John Carpenter's long-awaited return to directing, I thought I'd feature these photos, which actually look pretty cool. I just finished reading, perhaps, the best article about the career and life of James Cameron that I have ever read. The New Yorker just published their epic (12 pages long - fitting for Cameron) profile on the filmmaker, detailing his early life and early career, from Terminator to The Abyss, his five wives (there are some funny stories in that section), to what he's been doing the last 10 years (scuba diving, developing 3D cameras, etc), and of course, all about Avatar and its development. Dana Goodyear spent more than a year writing this profile and it's this kind of awe-inspiring film journalism that I admire more than anything.

Indie Trailer Sunday: Stop-Animated Indie 'Mary and Max'

I'm excited today to feature the newest official trailer (via New York Times) for Adam Elliot's Mary and Max, an incredibly unique and original stop animated film from Australia. You may remember hearing the name before, as this was the Opening Night film at Sundance this year (read my thoughts on it), where it gained a lot of acclaim, but never got picked up. The more I think back to it, the more I remember loving it. Watching this trailer again especially reminds me that it's one of those great indies that you've never seen anything like and probably won't see again. Lee Daniels Wants to Bring Miss Saigon to the Big Screen Soon

Lee Daniels is another name that most of you probably don't know yet, although we're hoping to change that by February next year. If you've seen the trailers or heard about the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, that's the film that Lee Daniels most recently directed. I have a good feeling that if everything stays the same, not only will we see Precious getting a Best Picture nomination, but I expect Lee Daniels will be nominated as well. Star Trek was one of this year's biggest movies and left fans eagerly wanting more. Unfortunately, it looks like audiences will have to wait a few more years for the sequel to hit theaters.

At the 2009 Screenwriting Expo which is being held in downtown Los Angeles this year, ComingSoon.net asked Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writers of Star Trek , if they could give us any updated info as to where the storyline will be going in the next film. Rumor: Jackie Earle Haley as Sinestro in Green Lantern?

He's played Rorschach and Freddy Krueger, now he'll play Sinestro in Green Lantern?! Unless you're a Green Lantern fan, you probably don't know who Sinestro is, but we'll explain all that. AICN is reporting a rumor (take this with a grain of salt) that actor Jackie Earle Haley has been cast as Sinestro, the lead villain, in the Green Lantern movie being directed by Martin Campbell and co-starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. Not only that, but they say that Superman has a cameo in it as well (the character, not Brandon Routh). Though I'm not sure if I can believe all this yet. If it's true, then this is some seriously great casting.

It's amazing how far some quotes can get, but this time these quotes deserve to be seen. Director Sam Raimi recently talked with the print edition of DVD & Blu-Ray Review (via Coventry Telegraph) about his plans for Spider-Man 4 and, more importantly, what went wrong on Spider-Man 3 (and how he won't be making those mistakes again). Ryan Reynolds Will Cross-Dress to Win Back Ex

Variety is reporting that Allan Loeb will write an untitled comedy for Working Title as a star vehicle for Ryan Reynolds ( Wolverine , upcoming Green Lantern ).

The trade describes the film as a "dude-in-drag romantic comedy, with Reynolds playing a jilted lover who must disguise himself as a woman and befriend his ex in order to win her back."

Working Title partners Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan will produce along with Jonathon Komack Martin (Reynolds' partner in Dark Trick Films) and Steven Pearl (Loeb's partner in Scarlett Fire). Working Title has a first look deal with Universal.

Liza Chasin will be executive producer along with Reynolds and Loeb.

Wood and Kebbell Join The Conspirator

The Playlist alerted us that Evan Rachel Wood and Toby Kebbell have joined the cast of Robert Redford's The Conspirator .

They join James McAvoy, Robin Wright Penn and Justin Long in the period drama based on true events following the assassination of President Lincoln. Wright Penn will play Mary Surratt, the only woman among a group charged with conspiring to kill the president. McAvoy plays Frederick Aiken, an idealistic young war hero who reluctantly defends Surratt and in the process comes to believe she is innocent. Long is playing Aiken's best friend, a one-armed Civil War veteran.

Evan Rachel Wood is said to be playing Wright Penn's daughter Anna Surratt, while Kebbell has been cast as the assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Ridley Scott Remaking UK's Red Riding Trilogy for Columbia

Columbia Pictures announced earlier today via Variety that they've acquired remake rights to the UK TV mini-series known as Red Riding, a trilogy of feature films that have been playing the festival circuit this year. The studio is "negotiating" with Steve Zaillian (Gangs of New York, American Gangster) to write the script and Ridley Scott (Gladiator, American Gangster, Body of Lies) to direct. Zaillian has already been working with Columbia, as he was hired to rewrite the Steven Soderbergh Moneyball script. Both Scott and Zaillian will produce the remake along with Andrew Eaton of Revolutionary Films, who produced the mini.

After leaving behind his past as Ross from NBC's sitcom "Friends," David Schwimmer made a jump behind the camera directing such comedic fare as Run, Fatboy, Run with Simon Pegg and episodes of HBO's series "Little Britain USA." Though his success as a director hasn't been stellar, he's certainly no Uwe Boll. Now Schwimmer has a new task ahead of him as Variety reports that Schwimmer is now taking the leap into darker waters as he will direct Clive Owen (The International) and Catherine Keener (Where the Wild Things Are) in Trust, a dark drama about the damaging effects an online sexual predator has on a family.

Screen Media has debuted the official trailer for Women in Trouble starring the lovely Carla Gugino over on Apple. If you don't know what this is, Women in Trouble is an ensemble film about 10 women and the trouble in their lives. But these aren't ordinary women: they're strippers and call girls. Carla Gugino plays real life porn star Elektra Luxx. She's joined by other beauties including Emmanuelle Chriqui, Adrianne Palicki, Marley Shelton, and Connie Britton, and flanked by a few guys like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Simon Baker. As sexy as this is, it kind of looks straight-to-DVD quality, but I'm still interested in checking it out.

Chris Pine Might Be the Next Jack Ryan for Franchise Reboot

After Chris Pine's breakthrough performance in this summer's Star Trek, the young actor has become quite the hot commodity. It looks like Paramount is the studio who will be keeping Pine busy as he's already locked in for Tony Scott's runaway train action-thriller Unstoppable (which is actually at Fox) and was also just added to D.J. Caruso's next project The Art of Making Money, a new Paramount project. Now we can add one more to the list as Variety reports that Pine is in serious negotiations to step into the role of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, in a reboot of the franchise based on Tom Clancy's series of political-thriller novels.
