Gina Carano's Knockout Will Be Like Old School James Bond

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Although I know not everyone is as big of a fan of Steven Soderbergh as I, he's still a great director that makes solid films. Now that The Informant is out, he's starting prep on a spy thriller called Knockout that will star real life MMA fighter, and hottie, Gina Carano. Empire just talked with Soderbergh and learned that it may be pretty badass, like an old school James Bond flick. He describes Knockout as "a combination of a Bond movie and Point Blank," though, "more on the scale of From Russia With Love than, you know, Quantum Of Solace... Something where the characters and the story are as prominent as the action stuff."

When this was originally announced, it was described as a "flat out action movie" that follows a tough girl from the wrong side of the tracks who takes the opportunity to use a special set of skills ...

Mark Strong & Thomas Haden Church Join John Carter of Mars

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Heat Vision has announced three more actors who will be joining the cast of Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars. First off, they confirm that Thomas Haden Church, who already previously revealed that he was in this, is officially on-board. He will play Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler. Additionally, it was announced that British actors James Purefoy and Mark Strong are also joining the project. Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

Stanton has rounded up one hell of a cast for this, that's for sure. Leading the way are young actors Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins; additionally on-board are Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, and Polly Walker. Most probably know I've been a huge supporter of ...

Antoine Fuqua Locks Up Prisoners

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Aaron Guzikowski's hot spec script for Prisoners , which was picked up by Alcon Productions a few months back has begun negotiations with a potential director, and it's none other than Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua, according to The Risky Biz Blog . The project that at one point attracted the likes of Bryan Singer, Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg is being fasttracked with plans to start shooting early next year with plans for it to be released by Warner Bros. on October 22 next year.

There's no word whether Christian Bale or Mark Wahlberg might still be involved with the film, which was at one point going to be made for a much bigger budget, but had recently been reconfigured to be produced for less than $40 million.

Mandy Moore on What Disney's Rapunzel Movie Will Be Like

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Well, it's a slow news week. Although this is interesting, we know enough about the project already that it's not that exciting. Anyway, Empire recently talked with musician and actress Mandy Moore about voicing the lead character in Disney's upcoming Rapunzel animated 3D musical. The project will be Disney's 50th animated feature and is a passion project for John Lasseter. After being delayed for years, it's finally moving forward at the Mouse House, currently slated for a holiday 2010 release. "I just feel honored to be in such good company. Being a Disney Princess is kind of every girl's ultimate dream," Moore admits. Read on!

So what can we expect from the long-locked royal? "She's sort of the quintessential sassy, feisty Disney heroine. She's quite modern, quite a curious girl as well," says Moore of the once-entowered princess. "She's just coming into her own and is anxious to figure out a ...

First Look: Mel Gibson as Walter in Jodie Foster's The Beaver

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
No, this is not a joke. Mel Gibson isn't filming another "The Colonel" prank. This is an actual, real movie being shot where Mel Gibson stars as a man who runs around (both literally and figuratively) with a beaver puppet on his hand that he treats like a live animal and his friend. Kind of like Lars and the Real Girl except with a beaver puppet instead of a sex doll. It's called The Beaver and it's being directed by Jodie Foster as well. These photos come from Splash News where they got a few shots of Gibson shooting on set in New York. I didn't realize the beaver would look so goofy, but alas, that's all part of the fun. This looks hilarious.

The Beaver is about Walter (Mel Gibson), troubled father and husband and CEO of a stalling toy company [who gives voice to] The Beaver, a glove pupper ...

Check This Out: First Teaser Poster for The Crazies Remake

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Overture has debuted the first teaser poster for Breck Eisner's remake of The Crazies that stars Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell, Danielle Panabaker, Joe Anderson, Joe Reegan, and a whole town full of crazies. The poster doesn't feature any faces or anything but is only just a simple early teaser. Kind of reminds me of the first teaser poster for The Invasion - I just hope this turns out much better than that movie (which was also coincidentally kind of a remake). It's a pretty damn cool design and I like the look of it, I just want to see a trailer or more photos first, especially since this doesn't live up to craziness the original poster anyway.

The story revolves around the inhabitants of a small Iowa town who are suddenly beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a mysterious secret biological weapon into the water ...

Ric Roman Waugh Directing Atlas Entertainment's Rubicon

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Relativity is partnering with Atlas Entertainment to develop Rubicon, a revenge thriller project created by stuntman Ric Roman Waugh (seen above) and Michael A. Lerner (of French Exit and Deadlines). Plot details are being kept under wraps at the moment, but the thriller is supposedly female-driven and set in a Mexican border town. Ric Roman Waugh, who has directed films like Exit, In the Shadows, and Felon, will be directing Rubicon. The project is being funneled through Relativity and Atlas' three-year, six-picture financing deal. I'm hoping with a title like Rubicon this will be a complex thriller, but it's hard to tell early.

The reason why the title of this project captured my attention today is because Rubicon is the same working title that Bryan Singer's Valkyrie used when it was shooting. That turned out to be a thriller with a detailed and complex assassination plot. I doubt that Waugh's Rubicon ...

Meatballs Holds Off Bruce Willis and Fame

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Despite the release of three new movies, the animated comedy Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Sony) based on the popular children's book by Judi Barrett remained at #1 with an estimated $24.6 million, a minimal 19% drop from its impressive opening weekend. The $100 million movie has grossed $60 million in ten days.

The main competition came from Surrogates (Disney/Touchstone), Bruce Willis' first action movie since 2007's Live Free or Die Hard , but it opened with an estimated $15 million in nearly 3,000 theaters, way below all...

Oren Peli Thanks You for Your Support!

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Last Thursday at midnight, ComingSoon.net and ShockTillYouDrop.com hosted one of the first midnight screenings of Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity in New York City, and like we've heard from the other screenings around the screening, there was so much demand that there was a line around the block and hundreds of people had to be turned away. Over the weekend, the movie also opened in ten cities for midnight screenings which were mostly sold out, and it's been reported (but yet to be confirmed) that the film may have grossed north of $100,000.

This morning, ComingSoon.net received a link from Peli himself with a video message to the fans, thanking those who went out to see the movie over the weekend and making it such a big hit. He's optimistic that the film's success in select...

Fantastic Fest Review: George Romero's Survival of the Dead

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
I'm not the biggest George Romero fan, but I do know that no one can make zombie movies like he does. Unfortunately in the last few years he's been making some pretty awful zombie movies, including Diary of the Dead which I saw at the Toronto Film Festival a few years ago and really hated. But he's back at the top of his game again with Survival of the Dead. It's not a return to form, but he is back. Somewhat like Steven Soderbergh, Romero has reached a point where he just likes to experiment and do whatever the hell he wants, which includes making a zombie movie that feels more like a western than a post-apocalyptic epic.

Survival of the Dead spins off of a character that first appeared very briefly in Diary of the Dead who is part of a small four-man group of soldiers that are just roaming ...

Live from Fantastic Fest '09: Part 1 - Sweet Austin Hospitality

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
I'm currently sitting in the lobby of the Alamo Drafthouse on the morning of the 4th day of Fantastic Fest down in Austin, TX. Although I got a few days of rest earlier this week, I'm back right in the thick of things already and exhaustion has definitely started to kick in. However, if it weren't for the wonderful hospitality of Tim League and everyone at Fantastic Fest, I wouldn't be as happy (and excited) as I currently am. This fest really is incredible, I've had a blast every day, and I love seeing movies here at the Drafthouse. I've seen about 10 movies so far, including Zombieland (as seen above), but there's still plenty more left to come!

One reason why Fantastic Fest is so awesome is that Tim has essentially created a week-long party for film geeks. Not only are we seeing crazy new films all day long (and ...

Sound Off: Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity - Your Thoughts?

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Now that you've seen it, what did you think? Normally we only have these kinds of discussions for big blockbusters, but because Paranormal Activity has so much buzz right now, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to stop and talk about it (as it just hit theaters today anyway). Is it comparable to The Blair Witch Project? Is it better than Blair Witch? Is it as scary as everyone is saying? Is it a good movie, a brilliant movie, or just deceptive and dull? Did you want more from it? Did it live up to your expectations? Sound off below, write down your comments, and let us know what you thought of Paranormal Activity!

To fuel the fire, I saw Paranormal Activity for my very first time in Telluride at an outdoor theater and was scared out of my mind. I'll admit that I'm a wimp and I'm scared ...

Zombieland Thoughts Plus A Quick Comparison to The Road

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
I just saw Ruben Fleischer's Zombieland for my second time down here at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. It's a great zombie comedy with lots of good comedy and lots of flesh eating zombies. But as I was sitting there watching it, I started to realize that it has a lot of similarities to John Hillcoat's The Road, which I saw a few weeks back at the Telluride Film Festival (read my review). And instead of just reviewing Zombieland normally (as Brandon will be doing that anyway), I thought I'd look at the comparisons between Zombieland and The Road, just for fun. So without further ado, let's get right into it, but beware there will be spoilers!

First off, both films are, at their very base levels, post-apocalyptic features about a small group of survivors who are traveling along a road to get to a destination that they believe is different ...

Brand New UK Poster for Gilliam's Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
An official UK quad poster for Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has arrived online courtesy of Empire. I'm featuring it today not because it's a poster you'll see in your own theater, but rather because it's a fairly well-designed and a wonderfully fantastical poster. It's perfect for Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which I've seen a few times (read my review), just because its got all that Terry Gilliam weirdness put onto it (notice the floating Tom Waits in the background?). There are even floating head versions of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, who filled in for Heath Ledger after his death.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a modern-day fantasy adventure in which Dr. Parnassus has the extraordinary gift of inspiring the imaginations of others. Helped by his traveling theatre troupe, including his sarcastic and cynical sidekick Percy and versatile young Anton, Parnassus offers audience members ...

Latest Venom Draft Turned In, Sony Still Moving Forward

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Way back in July of last year, Sony announced that they were officially moving forward on a Venom spin-off. But like Fox, just because they're "moving forward" doesn't mean it will ever actually happen. We last heard in April that they had worked on a draft but really couldn't talk about it. SciFi Wire now has an update from writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick that, "we've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward." Not exactly a huge update, but still an update, in a good way I suppose. But will Sony ever decide to make it? And who will they get to direct?

SciFi Wire next asked when they think it might go into production. But their answer to that was even more vague. "We're not sure, [but] we've turned in our two drafts," said Wernick. As ...

Ron Howard Talks The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft

Posted on 20:35 by Unknown
Though we've known that Ron Howard was going to be at the helm of an adaptation of Image Comics series The Strange Adventures of H.P. Lovecraft, we haven't really found out any details regarding his approach to the story about a wimpy writer who becomes a bad-ass fighter of all things supernatural (hence the H.P. Lovecraft aspect). This is a new experience for Ron Howard as he steps up to direct his first comic book adaptation, and Geoff Boucher from the LA Times caught up with Ron Howard recently, where they talked about the challenges of bringing Lovecraft to the big screen and a little bit about the story.

Howard says, "Look, it's challenging, but if we get it right, it could be really original and psychologically interesting and scary in a great way. And it's a graphic novel, this is new territory for me." Regarding the story elements of Lovecraft, Howard went on to ...

First Look: Promo Art for Nick Frost & Simon Pegg's Paul

Posted on 20:35 by Unknown
This bit of art, on display in the backlot at Universal Studios, first showed up on Twitter a few weeks back. I'm not sure why Universal has decided to put this up on display as part of the backlot studio tour, and not online for everyone to see, but that's Universal for you. Anyway, Collider now has a bigger, cleaner, high res shot of the first promo art for Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's new movie Paul directed by Greg Mottola, that's being shot as we speak. It doesn't show us what the alien looks like but it's a pretty good promo photo and it sets the mood for what's to come. If you don't know what Paul is yet, well, then you're not a rightful geek.

As a reminder, Paul is about two British sci-fi enthusiasts who embark on a roadtrip across the US starting at the San Diego Comic-Con. ...

Geoffrey Rush Ready for Pirates of the Caribbean 4

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
MTV talked to Geoffrey Rush who says he's ready to reprise his role of Barbossa in Spring 2010 for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides . The fourth installment is scheduled to be released in Summer 2011.

He said: "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they're not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn't be so good."

Variety is reporting that Columbia Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to Ghost Rider .

David Goyer is in early talks to create the story and supervise writers for a film expected to once again star Nicolas Cage.

The trade adds that plans are under way to base the sequel on a script written years ago by Goyer ( The Dark Knight , "Blade" franchise"). The original Ghost Rider was written by director Mark Steven Johnson.

The second installment will be produced by Avi Arad, Michael De Luca and Steven Paul, with Gary Foster serving as executive producer.

Marvel Working on Ghost Rider 2, Daredevil, & Silver Surfer Movies

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
An interesting update has hit Variety today regarding Marvel and specifically some of the upcoming comic book projects Fox has in the works - such as Ghost Rider 2. The article primarily mentions that Columbia Pictures has begun moving forward with the Ghost Rider sequel and brought on David Goyer to create the story and supervise writers (even though Goyer said "he hadn't signed on yet"). Goyer last directed The Unborn but is probably better known for writing the Blade trilogy as well as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The plans are to apparently base the sequel on a Ghost Rider script that Goyer wrote years ago.

The article also includes a mention about other projects Fox has in the works, including: Fantastic Four with writer Michael Green and producer Akiva Goldsman, a Wolverine sequel and several X-Men spinoffs, and a new version of Daredevil and a Silver Surfer film ...

Geoffrey Rush Returning for 'On Stranger Tides' Next Year

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
We know that Disney is trying to move forward on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides by next year so that it'll be ready to hit theaters in 2011 (I think they're desperate for another big tentpole). As of this moment, we don't know whether or not Johnny Depp will be back (given his complaints about Dick Cook's departure). But one actor that will be returning is Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Barbossa in the past three films. Rush told MTV that he needs to "keep his schedule open for a possible start to filming next spring." That seems accurate, but who knows if they'll get Rob Marshall on-board to direct that quickly.

Rush explained: "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they're not ...

First Photos and Behind-the-Scenes Videos from The Fighter

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Well this was unexpected. SlashFilm has discovered a big batch of behind-the-scenes photos and videos on IAmRogue.com for David O. Russell's film The Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. We've written about this project quite a time, mainly when it was to be directed by Darren Aronofsky a few years back, but now Russell has taken over and actually started shooting. Wahlberg and Bale can be seen in a few photos from the set, including the one above and the one at the very bottom (in the boxing ring), and more on the site. There's also a great on-set video below with Wahlberg talking about playing boxer Mickey Ward.

The Fighter follows the true story of Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and how he went on to win the lightweight championship with the help of his half-brother Dicky (Bale). Eklund once fought Sugar Ray Leonard and nearly went the distance against the ...

Tom Tykwer Directing German-Language Film 'Drei' Next

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Run Lola Run and Perfume director Tom Tykwer is set to make his first German-language feature in nearly a decade titled Drei (which means Three in German). The film is a comedy-drama centered on a love triangle. Tykwer's last German-language film was The Princess and the Warrior from 2000. Produced by Berlin-based X Filme, Drei is described as a "tragicomic film about love, morality and gender in late modern Germany, set against late modern Berlin backdrops -- a story of a love triangle with social and cultural-philosophical depth." Sounds like it could be a good return to form for Tykwer and a return to homeland.

Although I didn't really care for The International, I still love Tykwer, and just think back to Run Lola Run or one of my all-time favorites, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. If anyone also saw Paris Je T'aime, his sequence in that film was one ...

An X4, reuniting the X-Men and a big screen outing for The New Mutants. X4, she said, had yet to be pitched to the studio, however.

It will be interesting to see which movie gets going first, with Deadpool , Magneto and Wolverine 2 also in the mix.

Sony Pictures Classics Picks Up TIFF's Lebanon and Get Low

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Sony Pictures Classics seems to be the only indie studio buying films this year (read Roger Ebert's article on the state of the indie marketplace). Not only did they pick up A Prophet and The White Ribbon at Cannes, but they just picked up Lebanon and Get Low today following the Toronto Film Festival. SPC announced each separately today. "Lebanon is of those important films that will last forever in the marketplace. We are honored to be bringing Lebanon to the American public," said Sony Pictures Classics. The film is expected to be a big Foreign Language Oscar contender, most likely going head-to-head against SPC's own A Prophet.

I saw Aaron Schneider's Get Low up at TIFF and loved it (read my review). It deserves a good release and I hope SPC is able to find a market for it, since it'll be a bit challenging to market. Lebanon I missed, ...

Check These Out: Unused Posters for Duncan Jones' Moon

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
It's always heartbreaking to get a glimpse of the posters that were not used in a film's marketing campaign. One of the most recent examples of this was the beautiful hand-drawn poster for Inglourious Basterds that James Goodridge drew. Another set of unused posters have been dug up by our friends at Quiet Earth for Duncan Jones' brilliant low-budget sci-fi flick Moon that hit theaters earlier this summer. While I liked the actual poster they ended up using (as it was handpicked by Duncan), some of these posters are also pretty gorgeous and I'm sad we never got to see them until now. They're definitely worth checking out, so read on!

As far as I know, these aren't fan art, they were professionally created, just never used. My favorite one is the lower left one, with Duncan in that circle in the middle. I just think it flows great and looks ...

Blogging Live from Toronto '09: Part 3 - Final Fest Wrap-Up

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
To end the Toronto Film Festival, I caught a 9:30PM screening of The Disappearance of Alice Creed at the Ryerson Theater late last night. We arrived just on time, as I had just finished a big dinner with some friends, and decided to sit on the balcony. I'd never set foot up there before (in three years) and thought, why not check it out? The seats were fine, although they were far away, but as is usual when sitting below the projection booth, I could see the light shining in the air from the window all the way to the screen. What a way to end this fest, I thought, getting that true feeling of sitting in a cinema (think Cinema Paradiso).

That kind of experience is just one of many that I will never forget from TIFF this year. Another favorite part of this fest is the music they use ...

First Look at the New A-Team Van

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
20th Century Fox has begun filming The A-Team in British Columbia, Canada and we've got your first peek at the new van being used for the movie. The production was using the van, which looks similar to the one used in the 1983-87 TV series, for chase scenes.

Opening in theaters on June 11, 2010, the big screen adaptation stars Liam Neeson as John "Hannibal" Smith, Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck, Sharlto Copley as Capt. "Howling Mad" Murdock, and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as Sgt. "B.A." Baracus. The roles were made famous by George Peppard, Dirk Benedict, Dwight Schultz and Mr. T, respectively, in the original series.

Dick Cook is Out at Disney

I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney... from the beginning as a ride operator on Disneyland's steam train and monorail to my position as chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. To wrap up my Disney experience in a neatly bundled statement is close to impossible. But what I will say is, during my time at the Studio, we have achieved many industry and Company milestones. Dick Cook's Exit from Disney Leaves Johnny Depp Worried

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Yesterday Nikki Finke and THR confirmed that Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook was stepping down after working at the company for 38 years. For those not familiar with him, Dick Cook was one of the best executives to run that company in recent years. He established numerous beneficial connections and was a friend to many powerful people. It was a shocking and surprising announcement and no one knows who will replace him yet (which is also a big concern). However, his sudden departure may have quite an impact, as it seems there might already be a backlash in the industry that may hurt the studio in big ways.

We've already started to see producers and filmmakers around town expressing their sadness. Indiana Jones producer Frank Marshall said on Twitter: "Woke up to find Dick Cook has resigned from Disney. One of the most respected and classy executives in town. I ...

First Look: The New A-Team Van Being Chased Around Canada

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Yep, there it is, kickin' up dust and driving around the Canadian backcountry. Splash News has landed the first few photos of the iconic black van from The A-Team being chased around British Columbia, Canada. Yes, we already know who's in the cast, yes we already know that this is shooting, yes we already know that Joe Carnahan is directing, and yes, now we know the van is back. There's really nothing more to say about this. I mean, it's a van, and it's supposedly got the A-Team in the back of it, but they're probably not there in this shot. Splash ends this the best: "There's no catching this testosterone-fueled, four-wheeled hellcat."

Whoa! You thought John Travolta looked like a badass in From Paris with Love? Just wait until you see Michael Caine kicking some thug ass in this trailer for Harry Brown! A few of you may remember seeing some photos from this way back in February. A trailer appeared on the official website recently and it pretty much confirms exactly what I thought - this looks awesome. Unfortunately I missed seeing it in Toronto, but hope to catch it sometime very soon. It looks like Michael Caine is bringing us his version of Death Wish at the age of 76. Like the quote in the trailer, this proves he can still kick plenty of ass, no matter how old he is!

Watch the first trailer for Daniel Barber's Harry Brown:

Check This Out: The Fourth Kind's Creepy Abduction Poster

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Unlike the official poster for Paranormal Activity, this new poster for The Fourth Kind is actually pretty damn cool. I love that they used some design that looks pretty creepy displayed. It should definitely attract the attention of movie theater patrons, unlike that Paranormal Activity poster, which just has a still from the movie and a bunch of text. I'm comparing the two because they're both creepy thrillers with home video footage. And while I'm excited for The Fourth Kind, I haven't seen it yet, and I hate aliens, and probably won't see it because of that, but this poster is impressive. Thanks to JoBlo for debuting it - check it out!

A thriller involving an unsolved mystery in Alaska, where one town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a federal cover up.

The Fourth Kind is both written and ...

Cinematic Discussion: When Does Sci-Fi Become Fantasy?

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Note: For this discussion, the definitions below are localized to the medium of the motion picture and the genres of science fiction and fantasy films only. Though there are many examples in television, literature, and even video games, here is not the place for such examples to be entered as evidence.

We can probably all agree on the broad-stroke definitions and differences between Science Fiction and Fantasy. Where fantasy, at its most generalized, contains elements of magic, the supernatural, and a plot centralized and dependent on one, the other, or both, science fiction differentiates itself by utilizing elements that, while extraordinary and often times imaginary, are grounded in the basis of actual, established scientific law or scientifically-postulated theory. In other words, Rod Serling's to be precise, "Fantasy is the impossible made probable; science fiction is the improbable made possible." Using these definitions, it's often very easy to differentiate one film from ...

Interview: Karyn Kusama & Jason Reitman on Jennifer's Body

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Two interviews with Jason Reitman in two days! Yes, indeed! But this time I decided to mix things up and bring in someone else. Jennifer's Body showed up here at the Toronto Film Festival a few days ago (read my review) and after seeing it, I caught up with director Karyn Kusama and producer Jason Reitman for a quick interview in their hotel. This is Kusama's third feature film following Girlfight and Aeon Flux. We talked about what it was shooting this (and her interest in the horror genre), whether it's a horror-comedy or comedy-horror, and her two beautiful lead actresses (Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried). Enjoy!

Watch my interview with director Karyn Kusama and producer Jason Reitman:

This interview was shot using my Flip Mino camera up in Toronto. What I love about these co-interviews is that the two of them usually end up in discussions on their own because they ...

Soderbergh Updates Us on Liberace, Cleo, and Limey Sequel

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
As I already mentioned earlier in regards to the Spalding Gray documentary, I interviewed Steven Soderbergh last weekend up here in Toronto. The full interview will be up this weekend, but I wanted to write about a few of the updates that he told me, as I asked him about almost all of his upcoming projects. We've heard details off and on recently about all of them (the most recent update was just a few weeks ago), but Soderbergh gave us some solid details on three of his new projects, including that two of them are shooting next year, and one of them has all the funding that it needs to start shooting. Read on for more!

In regards to the 3D rock 'n roll opera Cleo, about Cleopatra, Soderbergh said: "Cleo we've got to figure out, because we have the money, we just haven't scheduled it." When it was originally ...

Nicole Kidman to Star in Tomas Alfredson's The Danish Girl

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Last year, Tomas Alfredson directed, in my mind, one of the best films of the entire year: Let the Right One In. A haunting story exploring adolescence, alienation, and identity. Well, Alfredson's set to take man the helm again with another story exploring identity, though devoid of the supernatural. The Danish Girl is an adaptation of David Ebershoff's book, the account of Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe, who in 1931 was the first to receive a sex change operation, going from man to woman. Nicole Kidman has signed on to portray Wegener/Elbe, while Charlize Theron, who had been attached to play Wegener's wife, has dropped out.

It's more than obvious that Alfredson has the directorial chops to handle was is sure to be an emotional hail storm. His deft portrayal of an outcast and inner struggle in Let the Right One In should prove to carry over nicely into this film. But it's ...

7 Clips From Jennifer's Body Online

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Yahoo! Movies has posted seven clips from Jennifer's Body ! Directed by Karyn Kusama from a Diablo Cody script, the comedy-horror-thriller stars Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Johnny Simmons, Adam Brody and J.K. Simmons.

The film, opening September 18th, is about small town high school student Jennifer (Fox), who is possessed by a hungry demon. She transitions from being "high school evil" - gorgeous (and doesn't she know it), stuck up and ultra-attitudinal - to the real deal: evil/evil. The glittering beauty becomes a pale and sickly creature jonesing for a meaty snack, and guys who never stood a chance with the heartless babe, take on new luster in the light of Jennifer's insatiable appetite. Meanwhile, Jennifer's lifelong best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried), long...

Exclusive: The Directors of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
If you're a director ready to tackle your first feature film, you could certainly take an easier route than the duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who decided to adapt the children's book Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi and Ron Barrett into a fully CG (and 3D!) animated experience.

Previously, they had produced the short-lived MTV animated series "Clone High" and the long-running CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother," but neither could have prepared them for the task of capturing the magic of the beloved book about food falling from the sky. Working on it for 3 1/2 years, they succeeded at making a computer-animated movie as funny and entertaining as anything from Pixar or DreamWorks, embellishing the high concept premise with non-stop humor, impressive...

DC Entertainment Has No Current Plans for Superman?

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Comic book movies and their companies have been at the forefront of industry talk over the past two weeks. First there was Disney's huge $4 billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment, and then Warner Bros. joined forces with DC Comics to form DC Entertainment to counter the Mouse Power House. But now that the industry is sifting through the red tape and the ink is drying on these new contracts, we're finally getting to some project specifics. MTV caught up with Diane Nelson, head of the recently formed DC Entertainment where she offered information on one of DC Comic's most iconic properties and it's not exactly good news.

Here's what Ms. Nelson told MTV:
"We've obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it's a key part of the family, but we don't have current plans behind Superman."

Talk about a Debbie Downer. Honestly, I can't imagine why Warner ...

Must Watch: Creepy Trailer for Paranormal Activity Debuts!

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Paramount has just debuted the official trailer for Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity today, an indie film that showed at Slamdance a few years ago but has been lying dormant till now. It's a creepy thriller being called Blair Witch for this generation about a couple being haunted by a demon. I had the chance to see this at Telluride and it really is scary as hell, but also a great film. If you want to stay completely fresh going into this (which I suggest), then don't watch this trailer, but if you need to be convinced then go ahead. I'm not fond of their choice to use the camera footage of the test screening audience, but that's just me. Watch it!

Harrison Ford Says the Story for Indiana Jones 5 is Ready

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
We've all read Shia LaBeouf's quotes, we know he's all set for the fifth installment of one of my most beloved trilogies of all time - wait, there was a fourth Indy film? Hm. Must've missed that - oh, that's right, it was terrible and made me loathe everyone involved. Right. Well, we were all updated that the fifth installment, tentatively titled just Indiana Jones 5, was in the research phase a few months back, but according to People, Indy himself, Harrison Ford, is ready to don the fedora and crack his whip again - depending on the script, of course. Although apparently Lucas and Spielberg have already figured out what the story is.

"The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form," Ford told France's Le Figaro. "Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is ...

Jeffrey Dean Morgan Joins Red Dawn, Eyes Lobo Project

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
When Watchmen was released back in March, Jeffrey Dean Morgan definitely made a splash as the dark, ironically named anti-hero, The Comedian. After Hollywood saw that he was more than just another guy on "Grey's Anatomy," the offers started pouring in, and he's a pretty busy man. Though he just wrapped filming on the Vertigo comic book adaptation of The Losers, Variety reports that he's already in final negotiations to join the cast of the Red Dawn remake for MGM that Dan Bradley is directing this fall. But apparently Morgan's also interested in another recently announced comic book film adaptation on that's the horizon.

SuperHero Hype caught up with the actor on the set of The Losers in Puerto Rico where he expressed a bit more than a fleeting interest in the recently announced Guy Ritchie adaptation of Lobo, another DC Comics property. Regarding his potential casting, he said: "That would ...

D23 Expo: John Lasseter Maps out the World of Cars 2

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Taking the stage this morning at Anaheim's D23 Expo, John Lasseter spoke at length about Pixar's summer 2011 film, Cars 2 which will reunite the cast of the 2006 hit, taking Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and friends on an international road trip.

Concept art was shown of the locations that McQueen will visit in his world tour, all decked out with automobile-inspired variations of the real world (the Eiffel tower has a wheel design at the base, Big Ben is called "Big Bentley"). The locations (which seem to be in the same order they appear in the story) included Tokyo, Japan, Black Forest, Germany, an unknown Oktoberfest town (where Lasseter showed an image of Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) wearing "mater-hosen"), Porto Corsa, Italy, Paris, France and London,...

Official Trailer for Disney's A Christmas Carol Finally Arrives

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Disney has finally debuted the official trailer for Robert Zemeckis' A Christmas Carol in glorious high definition on Yahoo today, but unfortunately not in glorious 3D (for better or worse). This is the very same trailer that they've been playing for a long time now, but it just hasn't showed up online until today, which is a bit odd considering this has been playing in theaters since the summer. My opinion remains the same - I'm looking forward to seeing it, but I'm not overly excited. I guess I'm just tired of Zemeckis doing the same thing over and over, for a third time now, and even with Jim Carrey, it doesn't make a difference. Check it!

Soderbergh Says His Spalding Gray Documentary is Finished

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
I just finished an interview with Steven Soderbergh, one of my personal favorite directors, up in Toronto today. It's a fascinating interview that covers The Informant and his directing career, but at the end I asked him for a brief update on all of his projects in the works, since he has quite a few. I asked him for an update on the Spalding Gray documentary he's been working on and the good news is that it's ready to go. "Yea, I just finished it," Soderbergh said. "Yea, we're going to go to Slamdance [with it]." Gray, for those who don't know, is a writer and actor best known for his monologues, like the one seen in Swimming to Cambodia.

"Yea, I'm happy with it, it took a long time. That was another example where... It sort of, for a while, was really defined by what I didn't want it to ...

Blogging Live from Toronto '09: Part 1 - Off to a Slow Start

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
If it weren't for two films I saw in the last two days, I would've been unhappy with the start of this year's Toronto Film Festival. The first two I saw on Thursday, the first day of the fest, were two films I was looking forward to seeing, and yet both of them were huge let downs. Not a good start for a festival that lasts 10 days and boasts a line-up of over 250 international features. I'm glad to see that they've kept their slogan "For the Love of Film" this year, though I'm not seeing it up on display as much as last year. Maybe that's why it's off to a slow start? Or (more likely), maybe it's just a coincidence that they switched their signs?

Then again, I did just spend an entire day on planes flying straight from Telluride to Toronto. It's a huge change of pace ...

Fourth Pirates Based on Powers' On Stranger Tides ?

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
This afternoon, Walt Disney Pictures made the big announcement at the D23 Expo that the fourth "Pirates" film will hit theaters in Summer 2011 and be titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides .

Speculation has already begun that the subtitle "On Stranger Tides" refers to author Tim Powers' novel with the same name. The following is the official description of the book:

Puppeteer John Chandagnac, who was sailing to Jamaica to get revenge on the uncle who had stolen his father's inheritance, has no choice but to join the buccaneers who have taken him prisoner--and soon, known now as the pirate Jack Shandy, he finds himself learning to survive in a treacherous new world of cutlass-fights, sea-battles, and voodoo magic on sun-blinded tropical islands....

Following the announcement, Johnny Depp appeared in full Jack Sparrow costume, taking the stage and announcing a Summer 2011 release date for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides , the new title for the fourth installment!

Eva Green and Ewan McGregor in an Apocalyptic Romance

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
French actress Eva Green was given quite the shove into stardom when the landed the role as Bond girl Vesper Lynd alongside Daniel Craig's James Bond in 2006's Casino Royale. ScreenDaily reports now Green is starring alongside another top notch British actor in David Mackenzie's tentatively titled new film Last Word, also starring Ewan McGregor.  Danish screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson wrote the script which tells the story of two people who fall in love as the world around them crumbles.  Shooting is currently under way in England already and features a whole slew of other acclaimed international actors rounding out the cast.

Ewen Bremmer, who starred with McGregor in 1996's Trainspotting, is also featured along with acclaimed British actor Stephen Dillane (Thomas Jefferson in HBO's John Adams) and Danish actress Connie Nielsen (Gladiator).  A very eclectic cast should make this a project to keep an eye on, but my curiosity is ...

First Full Trailer for Solomon Kane with James Purefoy

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
An official full-length trailer for Michael Bassett's Solomon Kane that stars James Purefoy has finally debuted online today. A Russian dubbed version of this same trailer hit a few days earlier this week, but we decided to wait, and this US version finally showed up just before the weekend. While this is showing here at the Toronto Film Festival (where I hope to catch it), it probably won't hit theaters in the US sometime until 2010. I think this looks great, it just looks like a darker, more refined version of Van Helsing, with some Lord of the Rings-like fantastical elements, great action, and that's about it. I'm looking forward to it!

Watch the first trailer for Michael Bassett's Solomon Kane:

A 16th century Puritan, Solomon Kane is a somber-looking man who wanders the world with no apparent goal other than to vanquish evil in all its forms. His adventures, published mostly ...

Cameron's Underwater 3-D Drama 'Sanctum' Coming 2010

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
To be directed by Alister Grierson from a script by Andrew Wight and John Garvin, and overseen by the wide, deep gaze of James Cameron, Sanctum has been co-purchased by Relativity and Universal, according to Variety today. Andrew Wight, a long-time associate of Cameron's who helped develop the 3-D technology seen in the documentaries like Aliens of the Deep and Ghosts of the Abyss, used his own death-defying experience as a catalyst for Sanctum. While leading a diving expedition miles into a system of underwater caves, a freak storm collapsed the entrance forcing Wight and his team to race to find another way out.

From what I can gather, this sounds like The Descent - but underwater. And in 3-D. Which isn't to say that's a bad thing. Especially having been co-written by the guy who actually experienced what must have been the most terrifying experience of his life (and, seriously, ...

Pixar Updates: Mr. Pricklepants, Cars 2, & Winnie the Pooh

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
The legendary John Lasseter stopped by London earlier today for a special Disney Animation Showcase and made a handful of exciting announcements related to upcoming Disney and Pixar projects. First off, he revealed that ex-James Bond actor Timothy Dalton would be providing his voice in Toy Story 3 for the character of Mr. Pricklepants, a hedgehog toy with thespian tendencies (via Empire). If you've seen Hot Fuzz, you'll know Dalton is usually a brilliant addition to any movie these days, and I can't wait to hear his voice in this. Lasseter made a few other exciting reveals, including plot details for Cars 2, so read on!

Empire also got to see some footage from Toy Story 3 and confirmed that the storyline now involves Buzz and Woody's owner Andy leaving for college and the toys being dumped at a day care center. I believe the trailer is due out in just ...

McGowan Injured Working on Red Sonja

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Fox News is reporting that Rose McGowan injured herself working on Red Sonja :

"I had wrist and elbow surgery and they took part of my elbow out. I had really bad nerve damage from doing stunts - I do a lot of my own stunts," McGowan recently told Tarts. "I could no longer use my arm, but now I can hold a fork and drive so we're working our way up. It'll probably be another six months of rehab, but It's the price you pay for being really limber and being able to do back flips!"

While it says in the article above that this brought production to a halt, the official start of filming was never announced, so perhaps she was just in training?

Douglas Aarniokoski is expected to direct the film, written by David N. White. It is based on the heroine created...

Official Black Dynamite Trailer - Watch This, Jive Sucker!

Apparition has debuted the official theatrical trailer for Black Dynamite, the blaxploitation throwback starring Michael Jai White. This film is so badass that I can't even use the word badass to describe it because it would be way too tame of a term! I first saw this up at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and it was awesome. It gets a little too wild, too often, and by the end I was almost tired of it (read my review). But in the 2-minutes of this trailer, you definitely won't get tired! Warner Brothers & DC Comics Form DC Entertainment Inc.

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
A response to Disney's acquisition of Marvel maybe? It seems that DC Comics properties are finally going to see the same kind of structure and stability that Marvel has displayed over the past few years, as Warner Bros. Entertainment as created a brand-spankin'-new company, dubbed DC Entertainment Inc., that will "fully realize the power and value of the DC Comics brand and characters across all media and platforms." Or so the press release says. DC Entertainment is to be run by Diane Nelson, former president of Warner Premiere (the studio's direct-to-video arm) that cranked out quite a few movies based on DC properties.

Paul Levitz, president and publisher of DC Comics since 2002, is to become a writer and consultant for DC Entertainment after a new executive publisher is found, according to Nikki Finke. This restructuring, however, will not have Levitz reporting directly to Nelson, though how much control and to ...

New Line & Tolkien Finally Settle Lord of the Rings Litigation

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Though the exact terms of the settlement were not released, THR reports today that New Line Cinema, the Tolkien estate, and publisher Harper Collins have finally settled the big lawsuit over profits from the Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. For those of you who aren't enraptured with the legal goings-on of Hollywood, the Tolkien estate had sued New Line for an approximated $150 million in damages last year for failing to pay the 7.5 percent of the gross they were contractually obligated to receive from the three films -- which, need I remind you, netted around $6 billion combined. Finally all Tolkien lawsuits are now settled!

Commenting on the settlement, Christopher Tolkien said: "The Trustees regret that legal action was necessary, but are glad that this dispute has been settled on satisfactory terms that will allow the Tolkien Trust properly to pursue its charitable objectives. The Trustees acknowledge ...

Another Weinstein Reboot: Stephen King's Children of the Corn

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Another day, another remake. According to Variety and the still-surviving Weinstein Company, Stephen King's classic short story Children of the Corn is set to be re-imagined and brought to the screen yet again. Previously seen in the 1984 film, directed by Fritz Kiersch, the book tells the story of a boy preacher who persuades the children in a small Nebraska town to kill all of the adults. Tapped to transform King's prose to script is Ehren Kruger, who is unfortunately co-responsible for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen most recently. Yikes, I know. More horror reboots? Couldn't this classic just stay a classic forever?

"We felt the [original] film was a missed opportunity," said Bob Weinstein. "If you read the short story, it's got such a strong feeling to it and there's this religious overtone to it as well. Ehren wants to hit it hard. It's popular in Hollywood to say you ...

Final Destination Holds Off Labor Day Competition

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Even though none of the top movies over the four-day Labor Day holiday weekend brought in more than $16 million, the holiday box office saw a bump from last year, most of that money coming from two returning movies, which held off the competition from three new movies.

Retaining the top spot, the first 3D installment of the venerable horror franchise The Final Destination (New Line/WB) brought in roughly $15.5 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $50.6 million. It's likely to surpass the gross of the previous most successful...

Dimension have also tapped Ehren Kruger ( The Ring ) to adapt Stephen King's short story Children of the Corn into a new movie. The story of a boy preacher who persuades the kids of a Nebraska town to kill all the adults was previously turned into a movie in 1984, and that went on to spawn six sequels.

Telluride 2009 Review: John Hillcoat's The Road

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Beautifully bleak. That's the best way to describe John Hillcoat's The Road, which I saw yesterday evening in Telluride. Although it's a rather depressing story overall, it's told with such an incredible amount of vigor and passion, that it's actually possible to enjoy. Especially because director John Hillcoat and screenwriter Joe Penhall made sure to keep the integrity of Cormac McCarthy's novel intact and stay as true to his words as possible. It seems like a near impossible book to adapt, but they did the absolute best job they could. For as bleak as it was, I was never bored, and it was never bland at all, which is quite an accomplishment.

Set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, where every tree is burnt out or dead, nothing but greyness remains, and the sun never shines, The Road is about a father (Viggo Mortensen) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee). It's a story about ...

Team Behind The Road Paves The Way for Future Projects

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Director John Hillcoat (right above), who also directed The Proposition, and screenwriter Joe Penhall (left above) recently showcased their bleak vision of the post-apocalyptic future in their adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's best-selling novel The Road which had a screening at the Telluride Film Festival (read Alex's review). But the future for Hillcoat and Penhall looks to be ripe with opportunity, which is great news for both.  One new project has Penhall in talks with Daniel Craig to star in a remake of the 1973 Gaelic heist film La Bonne Annee, which follows a recently released prisoner's plan to rob jewelers in Cannes.

Penhall and Craig have previously worked together on the 2000 film Some Voices and Enduring Love in 2004, however, it might be a little while before this team actually gets together again.  Hillcoat is also in talks with Craig for another unnamed project in addition to adapting the novel ...

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
After stepping out of Up in the Air and writing my review, I realized that I hadn't otherwise written about the Telluride Film Festival yet, which is shame because it's such a wonderful festival. It lasts for only 4 long days, but it takes place in a small, quaint mountain town, and I just love being here, especially as an oddly relaxing (or quieter) way to kick off my epic festival tour. As of writing this, I've seen only 5 films so far (more details on those below), but I just wanted to make sure I start a running tally / list of all the films I've seen on this trip. Although at least two of them are films that I'd already seen in Cannes previously.

Because I attended the Cannes Film Festival back in May (see my coverage here), I already got to see most of the films that the ...

Worth Watching: Awesome Live-Action Halo 3: ODST Trailer

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Instead of featuring a normal trailer for a movie today, I thought I'd feature this amazingly badass trailer that Bungie / Microsoft made for Halo 3: ODST, the latest Halo game out in a few weeks (Amazon). This is exactly why I would love to see a full-on live-action Halo movie. They really should just hire the guy who made this and give him $200 million, a good script, and let him at it. I would love to see 2 hours of the kind of action seen in this. And although I know this is less than two-minutes, it's stories like this that could be the basis for a great screenplay set in the Halo universe. Anyway, if you haven't seen this yet, check it out!

Original video file comes from IGN, but embedded above thanks to MySpace. This trailer was directed by Rupert Sanders, an up-and-coming filmmaker who also directed ...

Clash of the Titans First Look and B-Roll

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
During tonight's "Behind the Screen" special on MTV , the network debuted a first look at Warner Bros. Pictures' Clash of the Titans in the form of a set visit as well as B-Roll footage. You can watch both clips using the players below!

Opening in theaters on March 26, 2010, the Louis Leterrier-directed action-adventure stars Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Huston, Gemma Arterton, Mads Mikkelsen, Jason Flemyng, Alexa Davalos, Izabella Miko, Nicholas Hoult and Pete Postlethwaite.

In the film, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful...

Sci-Fi Plot Revealed for Stallone's Rambo V: The Savage Hunt

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Just a few days ago news broke confirming that the fifth installment of Sylvester Stallone's Rambo series had been greenlit by Nu Image / Millennium Films and was already in the works (and even hard a storyline about human trafficking across the Mexico border). Well, hold on to your bandanas, because AICN's Harry Knowles just had a conversation with Mr. Stallone himself in which he reveals the shadows of what will become Rambo 5. First, we have an official title - Rambo V: The Savage Hunt - and a poster (a glimpse of it seen above). Second, well, this Rambo may prove to be a bit different than those four previous movies.

John Rambo will be returning to the Pacific Northwest, back to his roots, if you will. There we'll be seeing Rambo on the hunt, the one doing the chasing rather than the one being chased. The film will center ...

Brandon's Word: Gamer, Or the War on Brains Everywhere

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor must really hate brain cells. This much is for sure. After the outrageous, but strangely satisfying romp that was Crank, and its follow up, the somehow even more outrageous but less satisfying Crank 2: High Voltage, they're back with their latest co-written, co-directed feature, Gamer, in theaters this weekend from Lionsgate. If before Neveldine and Taylor hated the idea of your, the audience's, brain, this time they're out to destroy the entire physical hunk of flesh floating between your ears. And that goes for both inside the film and inside the theater. Read on for Brandon's review!

Gerard Butler and Michael C. Hall star in this "future-world where humans can control other humans in mass-scale, multiplayer gaming environments." There are two distinct game worlds that Gamer explores (well, explores may be a bit lofty for this film), both using the Nanex technology that replaces ...

Wonderful Posters: Where the Wild Things Are & The Road

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Instead of debuting any good trailers today, Hollywood has instead debuted a handful of new posters. We already featured the Bad Lieutenant poster earlier today and debuted the Fantastic Mr. Fox poster as well. Warner Brothers has also debuted one final poster for Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are, and The Weinstein Company has debuted two gorgeous posters for John Hillcoat's The Road, which is showing at Telluride this weekend. That poster for Wild Things really captures all the childhood wonder of the film. And these two posters for The Road really capture all the bleakness of that film. Check them out below!

A post-apocalyptic tale of a man (Viggo Mortensen) and his son trying to survive by any means possible.

The Road is directed by Australian filmmaker John Hillcoat, of To Have and to Hold and the western The Proposition previously. The screenplay was adapted by Joe Penhall (Enduring Love, ...

Steven Soderbergh Updates Cleo, Liberace, and Moneyball

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
The story of Steven Soderbergh this year is one of the most fascinating stories out of pretty much any filmmaker. We already know about the Moneyball fiasco, but besides that, he's put out two films this year, the second of which - The Informant! - hits next month, and he's trying to get back on track with another project (Cleo? Liberace?) in the near future. I'm hoping to catch up with him for an interview in Toronto, not only because he's still one of my favorite directors (I loved The Informant) but there's so much I'd love to talk about, considering he last said he can "see the end" of his career coming. Here's another update.

Soderbergh recently talked with the Orlando Sentinel and spoke rather openly about what happened with Moneyball ("well, apparently I can't be trusted with a sports film") and moving on from that as well as his ...

Tron: Legacy is Coming Dec. 17, 2010

Posted on 17:00 by Unknown
Walt Disney Pictures has set a December 17, 2010 release date for Tron Legacy . The move puts the highly-anticipated film up against Sony's The Green Hornet and The Smurfs , as well as Warner Bros.' Yogi Bear (We assume at least "Smurfs" will move, since that's two Sony releases on the same date.)

Tron Legacy is directed by Joseph Kosinski and stars Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde, Bruce Boxleitner, James Frain, Beau Garrett and Michael Sheen.

In the 3D adventure, Sam Flynn (Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin's loyal confidant...

Disney Sets Tron Legacy for a December 17th, 2010 Release

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Disney has announced a December 17th, 2010 release date for the highly anticipated Tron Legacy, arriving in theaters (and probably IMAX) in 3D on that day. This puts it up against Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet, which Sony just moved to that spot last week, as well as Yogi Bear and Sony's The Smurfs, which are also in 3D. I predicted many months back that Disney would drop this in the Avatar slot, just because it's another big sci-fi 3D event movie, and they're expecting Avatar to do well this year. It's a perfect date for Tron Legacy, even though it's a long ways out. And I'm sure Sony will move Green Hornet.

In this highly anticipated digital 3D adventure, Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father's disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial ...

Facebook Casting Rumors: Jesse Eisenberg & Justin Timberlake?

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
If it weren't for today being a slow news day and/or a travel day, I probably wouldn't care to write about this. They're just rumors and they don't mean much and I'm not even that happy with the choices. Our friend Carson Reeves of ScriptShadow wrote an update on his Facebook page mentioning that he's heard rumors about the cast for David Fincher's The Social Network, the movie about Facebook. He says that Jesse Eisenberg will play the lead character Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Timberlake will play Napster's Sean Parker, and Andrew Garfield will play Eduardo. How's that for some interesting casting choices?

If you're not sure who Mark Zuckerberg is, or why he's intereacting with Sean Parker, I suggest you go back and re-read the script review, where we talk about the story behind how Facebook started, which is the story we'll see in The Social Network. Eisenberg has been growing ...

Guy Ritchie Signs On to Direct DC Comics' Lobo Movie

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
It looks like no more gangster films for Guy Ritchie. The British filmmaker has signed on to direct an adaptation of the DC Comics' property Lobo, his first superhero movie. Joel Silver is producing the film, with Don Payne (My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Rise of the Silver Surfer, "The Simpsons") writing the script. Lobo is an blue-skinned cigar-chomping alien who is an interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter. The character is one of DC’s more recent creations (he was introduced in 1980s by creators Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen) and for a brief run in the 1990s was one of the most popular characters. Could be badass?

Lobo is an anti-hero who was meant to serve as a parody of other violent heroes such as Wolverine and the Punisher, with his stories featuring a nihilistic streak tinged with dark comedy and excessive violence. Perfect for Guy Ritchie, considering that before Sherlock Holmes, all ...

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Rob Marshall's "sort-of Fellini's 8½" remake and all-around star-studded extravaganza film, Nine, has peeled off a few new photos. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis as film director Guido Contini, the film follows his creative and personal crises while attempting to balance the many women in his life: his wife played by Marion Cotillard, his mistress played by Penelope Cruz, the star of his film played by Nicole Kidman, his confidant and costume designer played by Dame Judi Dench, an American fashion journalist played by Kate Hudson, a whore played by Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, and his mother played by Sophia Loren. Take a look!

It's seven ravishing and talented beauties all revolving around the tour de force that is Daniel Day-Lewis.

We debuted the first trailer for this musical way back in May, so check it out there if you haven't seen it yet!

Rashida Jones & Chris Messina to Star in Indie 'Monogamy'

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Two of my favorite up-and-coming underrated actors are set to start together in an indie romantic comedy. Rashida Jones and Chris Messina will star in Monogamy, which will be the feature directing debut of Murderball co-director Dana Adam Shapiro. This is described as a "cautionary tale about sex, photography and fear of marriage," that will center on a young couple's relationship and its trials. The screenplay was co-written by Shapiro and Evan Wiener. Production on Monogamy apparently already started this summer in New York. The hope is to have it shot and ready to hit the festival circuit in early 2010 (e.g. Sundance).

I first discovered Chris Messina in another little-seen indie romantic comedy called Ira & Abby. He's one of those character actors who takes on lots of roles as the husband or boyfriend and never really gets noticed. But ever since seeing that, I've been following him closely, ...

Robert Downey Jr. & Jon Favreau Reteaming for Cowboys & Aliens

Posted on 16:00 by Unknown
Didn't see this coming! The Risky Biz Blog reports today that Jon Favreau has officially slated Cowboys and Aliens as his next directing gig following Iron Man 2 with Robert Downey Jr. attached to play the lead. Sounds like Iron Man in the old west! Cowboys and Aliens is an adaptation of the Platinum Comics graphic novel. The first draft of the screenplay was co-written by Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. Then Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci took over and have been rewriting it with "Lost" producer Damon Lindelof. Now DreamWorks is readying the project for a summer of 2011 debut.

Exactly as it sounds, Cowboys & Aliens, written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley, explores what would happen if the traditional Old West enemies, cowboys and American Indians, found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona. This project has been in development ...
